What is a digital detox? It is intended to be a period of time during which you refrain from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, an opportunity to reduce stress.

There are several places all around the world in which you can practise digital detox. Today we present one of our favourite ones and, it goes without saying, it’s in Italy.

Eremito is a unique place, a lay hermitage located in an isolated spot, where one can spend a relaxing and reinvigorating time, away from the daily hustle and bustle of daily life.

One can breathe and sense the atmosphere characteristic of Umbrian hermit places; here the combination of nature, peace and silence encourages being in touch with one’s soul and inner self.

Marcello Murzilli is the man behind the Eremito Hotelito del Alma. In the Eighties Murzilli establishes the clothes brand El Charro. Later he settles on the Pacific coast of Mexico where he builds and runs his Hotelito Desconocido for 14 years.

The hotel was recognized in London as one of the top five Eco resorts in the world.  He then returns to Italy and in 2013 starts up Eremito Hotelito del Alma: a new concept in luxury tourism for Solo Travellers.

Eremito Hotelito del Alma, a place close to hermitages of the fourteenth century, is now one of the first digital detox hotels in Italy.

At Eremito, the luxury I wish to offer I found it in the past times when nights were lit with only candles and the moon. Return and appreciation for the essentuial in life is the real luxury.

The so called Celluzze are as the cells used by the hermits in past times who in their small and simple spaces were able to find time for meditation and prayer. Eremito has 14 rooms with a wrought iron bed with bedding made of hand-made hemp yarn, a shower and toilet.

The temperature in the rooms is always constant thanks to the under floor heating for the colder months, so there is no need for air conditioning.

In accordance with the principles of digital detox you will not find a telephone, TV or wi-fi connection, although the basic comforts are in the room. Instead you will find a comfortable desk made of stone by the window where one can be inspired while admiring the green valley.

In our garden we grow vegetables and herbs, so that all the food prepared in our kitchen is organic, genuine and high quality.

The frugal style of the Eremito Hotelito del Alma reflects on the meals: the menu is simple and basic and you will have a healthy and moderate diet, choosing recipes from monastic mediterranean tradition. Tastes and smells from Umbrian traditions and small villages built near-by monasteries.
The cuisine of Eremito is stricktly vegetarian. A lot of fresh vegetables and fruits are served, all in season; bread and pasta are home made and same is for jams and cakes. And don’t forget the most important: dinner is served observing silence.

At Eremito you can keep body and mind in balance while immersed in Gregorian chants. The relax area, next to the Yoga room, is very evocative. It is completely carved into the rock and here you can lay back and forget daily stress taking a steam bath and also using a whirlpool tub.

You can also drink natural teas and infusions like the melemito, a hot and sweet apple drink abandoning yourself to the pleasures of relax.
